EVENT HORIZON is dreadful horror

 [ The Gravity Centre ]

No, it is not a bad film, in fact it is so good at achieving its purpose, I actually wished the film would end itself quickly. EVENT HORIZON is not your run-of-the-mill sci-fi film, I'm sure many who have watched this will agree. It is not even origina l in that sense, and it does borrow heavily from films like ALIEN, HELLRAISER and even BLADE RUNNER. The magic of this film lies in its unorthodox setting and methodical build-up that makes it wonderfully horrifying.

The story brings us to the year 2049, where space travel has progressed enormously. The Event Horizon is actually a ship built for a secret experimental purpose: it has the ability to fold time and space thus making it possible for travelling distances not reachable in a man's lifetime. The ship disappeared as soon as it went into operation but after 7 years, reappearing again within the orbit of Neptune. A search and rescue team led by Miller (Fishburne) is given the task to check for survivors of the Event Horizon. The designer of the ship, Dr. Weir (Neill) follows to satisfy his curiosity as to what actually happened to his otherwise technologically impressive ship.

 [ The Gravity Centre ]

EVENT HORIZON is a sci-fi horror film, much truer to the word than something like, say, ALIEN would ever be. While in ALIEN, the crew has to cope with a ferocious creature while encased within tight spaces, in EVENT HORIZON, the forces which assault th e crew are undefined, but yet so powerful and horrifying. The story unfolds itself slowly and the suspense build-up is superb, up till the point where I really felt like saying out loud "enough! I can't stand this anymore!" There are more than enough jolt s to send your adrenalin pumping overtime. The story in itself is not exactly something very exciting and also, the acting is only at most, average by most commercial standards. Even so, the essence of horror is carried out very well in this film, thanks to its well-paced storytelling, disturbing set designs and some really gory sequences (which incidentally, has been quite generously removed by our censorship board).

Director Paul Anderson (who did MORTAL KOMBAT) and his team of "atmosphere" creators have done well in keeping EVENT HORIZON within the bounds of the term "horror." This picture did not do very well at the US box-office most probably for the dread-fact or impact it has on most audiences; people will not see it again and not many would recommend their friend to watch this. Although on the face of it, EVENT HORIZON is mostly molded for mass entertainment; many thrills, spills and suspense to keep audience s in focus. However, the offbeat horror element which it ultimately convey audiences is very disturbing. My friend and I could not say a word to each other for quite a while after going through the `experienceí of EVENT HORIZON. I guess it was just the im mense feeling of dread which the film had cast upon us.

Be forewarned, this film is not for the faint-hearted nor for pure entertainment. Be prepared to be disturbed if you should decide to watch this film! EVENT HORIZON is highly recommended, but at your own risk! It has been a long time since good horror embraced the big screen, and EVENT HORIZON is one movie that does this.

Re: Event Horizon review It's definitely encouraging to see the scope of popular science fiction extended beyond its customary pristine, glittering Star Wars style facade. All the more so if it gracefully embraces the other great literary tradition of gothic horror in the process. However, the final product's quality appears questionable at best. Theatrical shocks are not disagreeable in themselves, but the constant repetition of the old "door slams very loud and scares the wits out of the audience" routine tends to grow extremely wearisome after aforesaid repetition is sustained scene after scene. Cheap shocks aplenty here. And while gore is admittedly one of the traditional ingredients of a good work of horror, surely this movie carried it into dreary excess. One well considered, tastefully done scene would have done more to the movie's credit than an endless succession of bloodletting. That being said and done, watching that especially gory sequence with the original crew of the ship screaming about in their insane, literally hellish torments did leave quite a respectable impression, especially after due contrast with the previous scene (a hopeful, optimistic crew all ready to embark upon the voyage of a lifetime). An example of an instance in which the script DID get it right. Unfortunately, the movie did leave some critical issues undiscussed. For instance, the proposition that hell is no more than another spatial-dimensional quantity, to be visited at will, courtesy of advanced human science. Or if it is more than that, how Man's capabilities have advanced to the point that he is capable of shattering the boundaries of a realm formerly conceived of solely in spiritual terms.

certainly the best film ever in my opinion. I've read several reviews on it, they either say its excellent or terrible, choose your own but its definitely the best:) The fact that people say it is unoriginal is because there are only so many spaceship designs that can be used and if one looked totally abstract how could you relate to it? ~The fact that it takes an entirely different approach (personal demons) is what makes it so scary

Event Horizon is the best film I have seen. It is so well made and the effects are awesome. This movie will leave you hanging from the roof in fright. Don't let people tell you that it's a copy of Aliens, because I'm still waiting to see the creatures eating people. This movie is about a ship that gets lost and travels so far into space that it goes to HELL. To us hell is just a word, but in this movie it shows you a different perspective of what it's like. The ship, Event Horizon, becomes a psychological being of pure hate. It distorts the crew members minds and they hallucinate, become psychotic and die in the most gruesome way. It's a "must see", but not for the squeamish!

I absolutely agree with the reviewer on this one in every imaginable way. This was an EXCELLENT movie that will scare you to death. The acting was great, the plot was good, and the effects were, well....gross. Great movie.

Gross, Gross, Disgusting. That's how I feel about this movie!!!

From: Mitch (mitchman@centuryinter.net)

I first watched this movie alone in the dark, expecting a good sci-fi flick from what I had seen of the previews. I was in no way prepared for what was to come. This movie scared me so witless I had to shut it off and walk away from it the first time I had seen it, the only movie that I've had to so far. Sure, it was mindless in parts (aren't *ALL* movies?) but it conveyed such a dark and omnious message that no word other than "disturbing" can do it justice. The soundtrack was incredible, the special effects were very good, the sets were great (they really acheived the dark, evil scene that the movie came to protray), the gore was the most skin-crawling I've seen, and the acting was good. Many "critics" (and I qoute that strongly) didn't like it becuase it supposedly borrowed heavily from other movies and left unanswered questions. Well, I haven't seen Hellraiser or Bladerunner (yet), but this movie made Aliens look like a Disney movie and aside from the movie taking place in space, I see no resemblance. As for the "unanswered questions", if you are not able to put together the heinous message this movie drives home, you are simply not able to think for yourself and should stick to watching something that goes out of the way to simplify the plot so that you can comprehend (stick to ER or whatever =). Go ahead, watch it alone in the dark, I dare you =] And then watch it with some freinds... PS - this movie was so successful in scaring the shit out of me, I went out and bought it so that I could show it to my friends and watch them quiver like I did the first time I saw it =]

From: Rose (wheezychic@aol.com / Tuesday, November 3, 1998 at 13:57:08)

I agree with your review. I thought the movie was incredibly terrifying not only for it's Hell sequences but for the amazing way it presented the idea of what it could be like if man traveled beyond the reaches of our universe into a place natural law no longer was valid. It is a scientific theory right now that a chaotic universe could exist and most religions describe this scientific theory as "Hell," therefore, after I saw the movie and understood it's intelligent yet horrifying message , I came away from it completely spooked and disturbed. I can't believe this film has been blasted by critics. I think it's superb, and I know many people who urged me to see it and thought of it as a "strong stomach only" kind of cult film. It is an excellent film and the actors did a wonderful job of making the film totally believable. I rarely see films that deeply bug me. The last ones I saw that I found to be excellent were the Godfather, Schindler's List, Jacob's Ladder and Lorenzo's Oil among the few. I would now include Event Horizon on this list, but I definitely could not ever watch it again after how badly it spooked me the first time!!! =)

This movie was not scary. This movie was not science-fiction, this movie had no 'characters', plot or theme. Dialogues were ridiculous. The special effects were good, but what stood out the most was the atmosphere created Overall, all of these deficiencies can be tolerated, but BORINGNESS CAN NOT

I agree with Rose (wheezychick) about the idea of man being able to go somewhere he just was never meant to go. What a frightening thing. I'm one of those sickos who've watched this movie 5 times in the theatres and about 10 times at home on DVD. Hell is one place I never want to go and this movie made hell so real to the viewer. The reality of Hell is something few movies really tackle. And the box-office results of Event Horizon reveal the reason why. This movie is disturbing. Some say very poorly done. But you miss so much in your quick criticism. For instance, did you notice the shape of the Event Horizon? That's right, it is in the shape of a crucifix. The interior of the ship is textured (the colors, metals, and overall interior looks) in such a way that when it is well lit, it looks perfectly normal. But in dim light or near darkness it looks sinister. That is no easy trick to pull off. But the worst horror to me was seeing Lawrence Fishburn sucked into Hell. What a horrible fate for him! There HAS to be a sequel! But Paramount doesn't even list this movie on it's website anymore. Perhaps they are trying to deny all ties to it. I guess I could understand why.

From: adam bishop (adambishop7@yahoo.com / Wednesday, January 15, 2003 at 05:59:40)

I recently saw "Event Horizon" on the SciFi Channel, and I thought it was great. Not the best I've ever seen, like some others at this site have said, but nowhere NEAR as bad as the reviews I've seen. The idea of a ship that has traveled to (and wants to return to) a "hell" dimension is great, and I wish there were more movies exploring this idea. The movie got terrible reviews, but I thought it had a good plot, good acting, good special effects, good music - I can't see the bad parts. One could make the case that "Event Horizon" had a standard horror movie ending, except when you think about the fate of Capt. Miller (Laurence Fishburne): He got taken to hell! I've never been scared by a movie before, but two movies have come very close: "Event Horizon", for it's idea of a ship that went to hell, and "In the Mouth of Madness", for it's portayal of Lovecraftian creatures overtaking the world. If Sam Neill can do one more awesome horror flick, he'll have accomplished a horror hat-trick in my book.

From: Alex Blackmore (alexblackmore@hotmail.com / Saturday, May 31, 2003 at 23:47:43)

This is one amazing film though the ship reminds me of "Hal". Scary and thought provoking this film is an amazing horror classic! P.S: Did any one else out their feel sorry for Dr Weir? (I Did!) I mean even though he trys to kill the crew in a way he was helping them from what would happen I mean the ship even tormnted him and he was its creator (reminds me of Frankenstein) poor guy + who else thinks that the core survived I mean it could have dimension jumped! When the front half of the ship split from the back half (containing the core) how come the front half of the ship still had gravity? Dr Weir said that the core supplied the gravity for the ship! Any way this was a great film I definately recommend it to every one out there. P.P.S: The Person who wrote this review WELL DONE it was great!

So..you have read this far through the messages? Good... This movie has a great start. Special effeactes are good! But then goes downhill very very slowly. It builds up it's fear and the things you don't want to see underneath the story untill the story..falls away and it's main thing then..is carnage/bloodletting...This is a nasty trick..keeping you wanting for awnsers and a end..so you keep on watching...but as i said...it goes downhill..chaotic/evil horror fans might like this film. Science fiction fans however will be dissapointed (very!).. Do not watch this film if you are of good nature..it requires a strong will too block out those images of pain/torture/HELL.. .It is by all right a evil movie(i am serious!) and the end isn't worth it..it sucks..bigtime.. What a waste...:( and for this matter i wasn't scared at all..i just felt sick of it...blah :(

This is the scariest movie ever made. I'd consider myself a fan of all genres (my favorite movies are Amadeus and The Matrix) so I'm not some horror nut. I don't think this movie is a gore fest, but a creep fest! I think space is scary, I think Hell is scary and I think nightmares are scary. This movie put all these elements into service with a great ghost story full of characters we not only care about, but really like (even love!). I saw this film in the theater twice but it was really scary watching it alone in the dark on DVD. To this day, I love to show this film to my friends and see how creeped out they get. Forget the Exorcist, this is the real "scariest film of all time."

i do not like horror films, i never watch them (intentionally), i went into this film not knowing the outcome or knowing the type of film it was. As the film started and went on, with the patient build up I got more drawn in... to behonest i really enjoyed it, I had to look away at some of the unpleasent bits... but have since bought the DVD and watch it every now and then to see if I can get further through the bad bits... but i do like the theory behind the film... i think 'Hell" is seperation from good, or God...not an actual place but a state of mind, a place inside your mind where you keep things you're scared of, things you have done wrong, in this film they are manifested excellently, i still think this is a great film, well done, graphically excellent... ad would recommend watching it if youre not of the over-critical type...sometimes it's nice just to watch a film and enjoy it rather than pulling it to pieces.... leave that to your mind to do when you watch Event Horizon... 10 out of 10, or 2 out of 10 for the horror!
