Today on the streets

Today
out on the streets
a strange detached bustle
and strangers embracing
outside restaurant glass windows
shook me
wistfully into reality.

Today
in the company
of the weary
I didn't feel as old
and we were young together
all smiles
over coffee
all our lives banished into the brown.

Then alone again
contained in myself
under open lights
under wandering gazes
just unhurried
idle
but content.

Browsed friendly shelves
not belonging
yet welcome
this day just gets better
the longer
I stay
out.

Tonight
under streetlights
who don't care
we'll catch a cab
and catch our breaths
and speak in hushed
voices
the lovely dark.

backlit fuchsia

dry leaves
on a basketball court
gently stampede
the evening

on cracked stone paths
we tread
explosive short breaths
before grinding down

a labor of love
a cold windy walk
just to see how
the clouds are glowing

passing over feet
their eyes slowly aging
first up then down
then leaving us alone

and as your smile
so full of youth
flashes for that moment
your hands find mine

and the sunset spreads
kneels on dry grass
sleeps on our faces
overtaken by stars
