CAN I HELP YOU?

TCS's third sitcom has proved that it doesn't only take a corny family to make us laugh. While its predecessor's fantastic menu stole the limelight, "Can I Help You?" seems to be a more palatable fare of apt one-liners and affable characters, if the debut episode is anything to go by.
There is a hint of Gurmit's World type of humour as Gurmit Singh and Hossan Leong team up, this time as Assistant Manager and Household Department Salesman who were ex-primary schoolmates. There's a warm camaraderie between the two which sparks off a kind of friendly banter now and then.
Singh's nemesis is Sheila Wyatt who plays his fellow Assistant Manager. She's the no-nonsense, very single and very middle-aged career woman who feels threatened by the fresh graduate. Her "twenty years" of experience assumes an over-the-top superiority which is reminiscent of Miss Courtney from the late 70s'/early 80s' "Mind Your Language". Wyatt's caricature portrayal is quite controlled and not overly flamboyant.
Zaibo and Vernetta Lopez from "Under One Roof" ease into their roles of Security Guard and Cosmetics Counter Girl. Both sparkle as perky staff workers, exuding a passion for what they do. Newcomers Melissa Sidek and Alvin Low, on the other hand, have much to learn from their colleagues. As sidekicks to Lopez and Leong, much has yet to be fleshed out in terms of character. Perhaps we will see this in subsequent episodes.
Everything's about cheery-beery in the latest sitcom. One strange thing though: the silent window cleaner (Zach....?) who plays Singh's sidekick in "Gotcha!". Is he going to utter the odd line in later episodes? Why is he there? As the passive onlooker who knows everything but says nothing? Enigma or not, look forward to more good laughs. There are bound to be aplenty.
